Sometimes in the evening there is more space to create.

Sometimes in the evening there is more space to create.
For a few months now I have been joining a group of people via Zoom for Sunday Art Time. They live on the other side of the world to me and I didn’t know any of them when this started. That hasn’t stopped us getting together for an hour each week just to chat and make art.
Working with collage and simple book forms let’s me make work that can be finished in one or two sessions. I like the ability to make a work quickly, given most of my serious textile work takes ages to complete.
I have also found some good ideas from the broader reaches of the “junk journaling ” movement, such as cutting up large print books for useful phrases.
These mini-zines and collages give rein to the less formal (aka sillier) side of my art and has given me a lot of enjoyment in these grim times.
You can find some other examples on my collage|books|zines page.
I like this juxtaposition of my latest collage with the cover of a book on Degas’ monotypes.
Then in a random act of art I have left it in a niche we found near a local path. I hope it finds a new owner.
Sometimes we are so confused and sad that all we can do is glue one thing to another. – Lynda Barry
Those words from Linda Barry struck a chord this week, so the other day I made some collages.
I seem to have a thing about using clothing catalogues. This catalogue I particularly liked because of the bright colours and the patterns used in the clothing.
Photo inspiration for first collage.
I always aim to make more than one collage at a time. My inspiration started with a photo taken earlier in the day, but after the first collage the work started taking on a life of its own. That is one of the best things about making collages.
In the end I made 5 works. One of them in particular is already leading me into a new piece of work.
The first collage.
The second collage I loved all the stripes.
Collage number 3.
Collage number 4.
The final collage.
The other unexpected result of this work was, by including words in the collage I accidentally made a spam poem.
Spam Poem #6
P.S. During my residency in Japan in 2016, I also made collages from beauty catalogues. If you want to have a look here is the link you will need to scroll to the bottom of the post.

Once more, collage on the bus back to Canberra from Sydney. Words by Claudia McGill https://claudiamcgill.wordpress.com/2019/03/28/put-pen-to-paper-marathon-2019-week-12/, the last poem “I don’t like strangers, each one is too much of a fresh start, I no longer have the heart for. ”
