Cafe Wednesday 8 October

Two drawings today. The first is my favourite cafe subject, a furled umbrella, drawn using my new Copic 0.5 marker. This has waterproof pigment ink and I have a refill for it which I hope will last the length of my holiday (or perhaps I should just go and buy a second refill).

The second is my glass of water and it’s reflections where I used both my Copic marker and my Lamy Safari, whose ink is not waterproof. I wanted to try the combination and I’m pleased with the way I could use the ink to blend and bleed for the darker areas.

Cafe Wednesday – Arrangements

This week I’ve been working with my acrylic paint markers again. I like the bolder stroke which, along with the blind drawing approach, acts against making ‘tight’ drawings.

Earlier in the week I drew a coffee shop table arrangement, with just the black marker.

Next up I tried both the black and the red markers, being bold and adding some of the reflections as well.

I can see this style of drawing being easily translated into a lino print. Not that I have been anywhere near the print workshop so far this year.

3 Cafes in 3 Days

Three cafes in three days, a bit more than my usual quota of coffee for the week. I started off with drawing a grandmother and granddaughter, having a break together. The girl developed a somewhat ‘cubist’ head as she kept moving quite quickly. A few of my strokes ended up in unintended places (well that’s my excuse).

The next day found us having lunch at the National Museum of Australia, after having seen the Old Masters: Australia’s Great Bark Artists (more of that in a future post).

Lastly back to our regular place for a coffee today. The sun encouraged us to go for a walk before more clouds blew in. I particularly liked the way the fluting on the glass reminded me of colonnades and arches.

Cafe Wednesday – Wheelie Bins

Latest from the cafe, after a somewhat unfortunate drawing of a person at the cafe – drawing people isn’t my strong point – I decided to move on to a subject that was more forgiving, the wheelie bins outside the cafe.
