There’s something satisfying about making a series of drawings, or any form of art really.
Over the past three weeks I’ve drawn this onion three times. All have been drawn using colour pencils and some with watercolour pencil.
My first one I felt was rather too solid. It looked like it had a hard shell, not papery skin.

I tried again the following week with a different angle and a better outcome. I also thought that the placement of the saucer was stronger.

skin I wanted to capture
The latest version I drew using both watercolour and standard coloured pencils. I feel that the watercolour pencil gave more translucency to the skin than I achieved previously.

It has recently been mentioned to me that the onion now needs to be returned to the pantry for eating.
Interesting to see the 3 different interpretations. They each have something but I like the 2nd one best. I think its the blueish tinge

Thanks Emma! One thing I’m learning using the pencils is to include opposite colours to make that dominant colour pop.

Now that’s interesting – I am often peering at my colour wheel looking for the opposite colour to calm a colour down! I am not sure how we seem to be doing the same thing for very different reasons?!?!

It might be that there’ little blending when using pencil so I think it’s like an impressionist approach of the colours vibrating side by side. I suspect tonal values would also have an impact. Are you blending the colours or using them in blocks, unblended.

Sometimes I add it to the mix, others I add it as a transient layer to ‘knock back’ the colour.

This is quite a special onion to have its portrait done 3times! I especially like version 3.

Thanks Claudia, I’m sure if I was really disciplined I could have sketched it even more, but I don’t want it to get a swollen head! 😉
