Back to the bike racks. I think today’s effort is much improved over the one I drew last week.
And with the magic of my concertina book I can show them to you side by side.
I applaud the comment I read the other day that a bit of watercolour improves a pencil drawing no end. I’m hoping the same applies to this pen sketch.
However I think that I’ll need more than colour to fix the ‘errors’ in this supposedly observational drawing! Perhaps next time.
I’ve got behind with posting my cafe drawings so here are the latest.
I realise that I’m attracted to the repetition/ variation in many of my subjects.
Now that spring has arrived the cafe umbrellas, which I love drawing, are back outside.
This morning having coffee in another part of town I spotted a set of stacked crates which immediately bought to mind the work of the late Australian (expatriate) artist Jeffrey Smart.
To be honest I wasn’t expecting to be posting a cafe drawing today. I had thought that I would be posting images of ‘amazing’ prints, inspired by my recent Michael Brennand-Wood workshop. But when I got to the studio I discovered that I’d been doubled booked with a full class of university students.
So back to the consolation of a good cup of coffee and a custard tart.
I haven’t been to our local cafe much recently, but managed to make it both this week and last week.
When I checked back through my sketchbook I found my drawings from early August. So here they are earliest first.
The dinosaur’s back.
This week I did a pencil sketch of the signs outside the convenience store.
I wanted to put some colour in but was reluctant to work on the original drawing. Thankfully we now have scanning and printing so here is a coloured version of the sign drawing.
